ABOUT THE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CENTER & DBSA

Technical Assistance Centers (TACs) are funded through a three-year grant from SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The TAC is affiliated with the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA). DBSA is a consumer*-directed national organization with more than half of its board of directors, committee members and staff diagnosed with a mental illness. The TAC serves people living with all kinds of mental illnesses including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and other illnesses.

DBSA is the leading consumer-directed national organization focusing on the most prevalent mental illnesses, depression and bipolar disorder. The organization fosters an environment of understanding about the impact and management of these life-threatening illnesses by providing knowledge-based tools and information written in language the general public can understand. DBSA supports research to promote more effective, tolerable treatments and person-centered care. The organization works to ensure that people living with mental illness are treated equitably. DBSA was founded in 1985 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

  • On this site, we use people-first language whenever possible. For example, “people with mental illness,” “people who have depression,” etc. When we need a single-word description of the people we are here to serve, we use the term “consumer,” because it is currently the most widely accepted terminology. We recognize and respect that others may identify themselves differently.
  • The TAC does not endorse or recommend the use of any specific treatment or medication for people with mental illnesses. Information on this website is not meant to take the place of the advice of qualified professionals. While visiting this site can help you gain a greater understanding of recovery and mental illness, it cannot provide a diagnosis or treatment.
